NONINFECTIOUS DISEASES INTRODUCTION A disease that in not contagious is called a noninfectious disease Caused by lifestyle factors, environmental toxins, or gene mutations Cancer, diabetes, and immune system diseases CANCER A disease in which cells divide out of control Forms a mass of abnormal tissue called a tumor Mass will grow and harm normal tissue Sometimes cells from the mass break away and spread throughout the body via blood stream CAUSES OF CANCER Mutations- random errors in genes Some are inherited Most are caused by environmental factors carcinogens Chemicals and radiation MOST COMMON TYPES OF CANCER Cancer normally occurs in people over the age of 50 Different by gender Male- Prostate Female- Breast Cancer 2nd most common is the same for bother genders Lung Cancer Childhood cancer is rare but does occur Most common is leukemia TREATING CANCER Many can be cured if treated early Treatment starts with surgery to remove the tumor From there they try to determine the stage for the treatment Its important to know your body and warning signs AUTOIMMUNE DISEASES A disease in which the immune system attacks the body’s own cells Examples Type 1 Diabetes Multiple sclerosis: when the immune system attacks the nerve cells which causes weakness and pain Rheumatoid arthritis: immune system attacks joints DIABETES Occurs when the pancreas doesn’t make enough insulin or the body's cells are resistant to the effects of insulin Creating too much glucose in the blood Damages the blood vessels and the kidneys TYPE 1 DIABETES When the immune system has attacked and destroyed normal cells of the pancreas No more insulin in then created Develops in children Treatment Insulin injections, monitoring glucose levels, eating a healthy diet, and physical activity TYPE 2 DIABETES More common than type 1 Occurs when the body cells no longer respond normally to insulin Pancreas still makes the insulin Normally occurs in adults and overweight individuals. There has been an increase of diabetes in teens and adolescents Treatment Weight loss, exercise, monitoring glucose levels ALLERGIES A disorder where the immune system responds to harmless substance, allergen, as a pathogen Most common- pollen, dust mites, mold, animal dander, insect stings, latex, certain foods, and medication Mild symptoms itchy eyes, sneezing, and runny nose Severe symptoms difficulty breathing, swallowing
