NONINFECTIOUS DISEASES
INTRODUCTION
 A disease that in not contagious is called a noninfectious disease
 Caused by lifestyle factors, environmental toxins, or gene mutations
 Cancer, diabetes, and immune system diseases
CANCER
 A disease in which cells divide out of control
 Forms a mass of abnormal tissue called a tumor
 Mass will grow and harm normal tissue
 Sometimes cells from the mass break away and spread throughout the
body via blood stream
CAUSES OF CANCER
 Mutations- random errors in genes
 Some are inherited
 Most are caused by environmental factors carcinogens
 Chemicals and radiation
MOST COMMON TYPES OF CANCER
 Cancer normally occurs in people over the age of 50
 Different by gender
 Male- Prostate
 Female- Breast Cancer
 2nd most common is the same for bother genders Lung Cancer
 Childhood cancer is rare but does occur
 Most common is leukemia
TREATING CANCER
 Many can be cured if treated early
 Treatment starts with surgery to remove the tumor
 From there they try to determine the stage for the treatment
 Its important to know your body and warning signs
AUTOIMMUNE DISEASES
 A disease in which the immune system attacks the
body’s own cells
 Examples
 Type 1 Diabetes
 Multiple sclerosis: when the immune system attacks the nerve cells
which causes weakness and pain
 Rheumatoid arthritis: immune system attacks joints
DIABETES
 Occurs when the pancreas doesn’t make enough insulin or the body's cells are
resistant to the effects of insulin
 Creating too much glucose in the blood
 Damages the blood vessels and the kidneys
TYPE 1 DIABETES
 When the immune system has attacked and
destroyed normal cells of the pancreas
 No more insulin in then created
 Develops in children
 Treatment
 Insulin injections, monitoring glucose levels, eating a
healthy diet, and physical activity
TYPE 2 DIABETES
 More common than type 1
 Occurs when the body cells no longer respond
normally to insulin
 Pancreas still makes the insulin
 Normally occurs in adults and overweight individuals.
 There has been an increase of diabetes in teens and
adolescents
 Treatment
 Weight loss, exercise, monitoring glucose levels
ALLERGIES
 A disorder where the immune system responds to harmless
substance, allergen, as a pathogen
 Most common- pollen, dust mites, mold, animal dander, insect stings, latex,
certain foods, and medication
 Mild symptoms  itchy eyes, sneezing, and runny nose
 Severe symptoms  difficulty breathing, swallowing
