Bio means life!
Molecules are atoms bonded together!
Biomolecules naturally occur in living
organisms.
Carbohydrates are simple
sugars, or several simple
sugars combined, called
polymers.
Carbohydrates are composed of 3 elements,
C – Carbon
O – Oxygen H – Hydrogen
A monomer (mono means one) of a carbohydrate is one simple sugar,
called a monosaccharide.
Glucose is a monosaccharide.
A polymer (poly means many) of a carbohydrate is composed of
many simple sugars, its called a disaccharide.
Sucrose is a disaccharide.
Carbohydrates are important biomolecules.
Their primary function is to provide energy.
Lipids includes fats, oils, and triglycerides.
C – Carbon , H – Hydrogen, and O – Oxygen
are the elements that compose lipids.
A lipid is composed of these monomers,
3 fatty acids and 1glycerol to form a triglyceride.

The function of lipids is to provide energy.
However, lipids are a secondary
source of energy.
Lipids also play an important role in cellular membranes.
Proteins are long chains of amino acids,
and are essential to living organisms.
Proteins are composed of the following elements,
C – Carbon, H – Hydrogen, O – Oxygen, and N – Nitrogen
The monomers of proteins are
amino acids, there are 20
different amino acids.
Proteins can be enzymes, which control chemical reactions.
Another function of proteins
is to build and repair tissue.
The extremely important nucleic acids are biomolecules that
compose RNA and DNA.
Nucleic acids are composed
of the following elements:
C – Carbon
H – Hydrogen
O – Oxygen
N - Nitrogen
P – Phosphorous
A nucleic acid is composed of the monomers,
phosphate group, sugar, and nitrogen base.
In DNA and RNA, nucleic acids function
in storing the genetic code.
