Monoclonal antibodies
This activity is for learners doing the higher paper.
Learners complete a card sort describing the stages of producing monoclonal antibodies then use
the statements to draw a cartoon strip.
Teachers will need to photocopy and cut out a set of cards for learners to sequence, one set per
pair.
Answers
1.
A mouse is injected with a chosen antigen.
2.
The B-lymphocytes in the mouse undergo an immune response and produce antibodies
specific to the antigen injected.
3.
The B-lymphocytes are taken from the mouse.
4.
The B-lymphocytes are fused with cancerous tumour cells (myeloma cells) as they have the
ability to divide easily and quickly.
5.
The fused cell produced is called a hybridoma.
6.
The hybridoma cells reproduce very rapidly to form identical cells (clones).
7.
Each of the cloned cells has the ability to produce the specific antibody required.
8.
These monoclonal antibodies are collected and purified.
