Augustus: Rome’s first emperor. He established, or set up, the powers that future emperors would have. Ruled from 63 BC – 14 AD Citizens People who were allowed to participate in the government. Could hold offices or vote. Had to pay taxes, and males served in the military. Being a citizen in the Roman empire was honorable. Only Roman citizens were allowed to wear togas. Roman Advancements Engineering Roads Aqueducts Bridges Stadiums Aqueducts are like canals. Architecture Related to engineering. The art of designing buildings. Wanted their buildings to be strong AND beautiful. Used columns, open spaces, domes. Art Created realistic statues and paintings. Created very lifelike portraits. Portrait found in Pompeii Philosophy Wanted to show how the world really was. Wanted to improve life. Told people how they should behave to be happy. Stoics taught the people should focus more on being good and less on what they owned. Act for the good of the group, not for personal gain. Christianity Spreads Romans didn’t think that Christianity would catch on and spread. Instead, it spread quickly and Roman leaders were worried. They tried to stop it. In the 300s a Roman emperor became a Christian and later emperors made Christianity the official religion. The church began to influence Rome’s leaders. The pope was a huge influence.
