Mental Disorders Diagnosis
There are 11 different scenarios which describe symptoms and characteristics of mental disorders. Your
job is to read each scenario and provide an answer, using a complete sentence. Use the list below to
choose the mental health disorder that best fits the scenario
Types of Mental Health Disorders to choose from: Generalized Anxiety Disorder, Obsessive Compulsive
Disorder, Panic Disorder, Bipolar Disorder, Borderline Personality Disorder, Depression, Anorexia
Nervosa, Bulimia Nervosa, Binge Eating (overeating), Schizophrenia, and Dementia.
Scenarios
1. Sally decides to go to the doctor because of the feelings she has been experiencing. She explains to
the doctor that her symptoms include chronic worry, muscle tension, headaches, trouble concentrating
and falling asleep, feelings of nervousness (anxiety), and she is always waiting for the worst to happen.
Based on Sally’s symptoms, what type of mental health disorder does she have?
2. Mark’s friend Tim begins to notice some changes in Mark’s behavior. He notices that Mark has lost
interest in his hobbies; he has a loss of appetite; difficulty sleeping; and loss of energy. It seems that
Mark is in an unhappiness that he can’t escape. Tim even notices that Mark has had thoughts of death
or suicide from things that have come up in conversation. Based on the characteristics that Tim has
noticed about Mark, what mental health disorder could Mark be experiencing?
3. You enter a room with your friend Becky. All of a sudden, Becky has difficulty breathing, she is
becoming nervous and shaky, and she has a raging, rapid heartbeat. She is overcome with fear and a
terror that is almost paralyzing. What mental disorder is Becky suffering from?
4. Dan is obese (extremely overweight). He has begun to eat more than usual and faster than usual. He
has even started to eat when he is not even hungry. Dan is eating alone because he is embarrassed
about how much and how fast he eats. He is also having feelings of disgust, depression, and guilt. What
could be the mental disorder that Dan is experiencing?
5. Mary is 85 years old. She is experiencing a loss of memory. She is also not able to perform routine
tasks such as washing the dishes and keeping up with her personal hygiene. She feels disoriented to
what time it is and what place she is in. Her language skills are now beginning to decline. What mental
disorder does Mary have?
6. Ken’s family has begun to notice a change in his behavior. He has developed a fear of dirt and
contamination. Because of this fear, he has been washing his hands excessively. Also, he has a fear of
touching door handles because of the germs on them. What mental disorder is Ken suffering from?
7. Stephanie’s friend Brandy tells a counselor about the behaviors that Stephanie has been displaying
lately. Brandy says, “Stephanie has been eating a lot in secrecy and then using the bathroom
immediately following. Also, she has had bad breath lately and she has been complaining about her
throat being sore. She also told me that her dentist said her enamel on her teeth is beginning to erode.”
Brandi then asks her counselor, “What do you think could be wrong with Stephanie?”
8. Cody tells his doctor that he is experiencing many different moods lately. He goes from having a
feeling of being happy, being overly excited, and having lots of energy; to having feelings of depression
and sadness. When he is feeling depressed and sad, he can barely get out of bed. What is wrong with
Cody?
9. Meghan’s tells her psychiatrist that she is experiencing strange feelings. She has begun to
hallucinate, hear voices, carry out conversations with those voices, and spend days doing nothing at all
(including neglecting her personal hygiene). She also has a distorted perception of reality. What
diagnosis do you think Meghan’s doctor will give her?
10. Tammy has lost an extreme amount of weight in a short time. Her friends are very concerned about
her because she has developed some ritualistic eating habits. They have noticed that she is exercising
excessively, she has begun to lose hair, she has started dressing in baggy clothes, and she is always cold.
They even notice that Tammy seems depressed. What could Tammy be suffering from?
11. Laine goes to her doctor’s office because she has noticed a change in herself lately. She has been
having a difficult time maintaining close connections with friends and family and she is also having a
hard time trusting others. She feels like she is experiencing identity disturbances. From all her stress
lately, she has experienced brief psychotic episodes. What mental disorder is Laine experiencing?
