Inheritance
and
Learned Behaviors
Genes-
Part of a chromosome. Contains the
DNA code for an inherited trait.
Inherited Trait-
Learned Behavior-
A characteristic passed
from parents to their
offspring. The color of
fur passed on to puppies
is an inherited trait.
A behavior that is acquired
through experience.
(reading a book, teaching a
dog to sit) Instinct is a
behavior that is inherited
at birth – natural.
Dominant Trait-
Recessive Trait-
A trait that appears even if an
organism has only one factor, or
gene for that trait. (if dominant
and recessive appear at same time
the dominant always appears.
A trait that appears only if an
organism has two factors, or
genes for that trait. (parents have
blue eye trait but have brown eyes
yet offspring has blue eyes.)
Punnett Square-
Graph used to
illustrate
dominant and
recessive traits in
offspring.
Genotype – the frequency
contained in the
organisms genetic
material; DNA. (Genotype
involves genetics, while a
phenotype is what the
person actually looks like Your kid has blonde hair so
the Genotype is bb)
phenotypeThe expressed trait or
function of what you
see. (eye color, hair
color)
