Revise and Remember Grade 5 Human Digestive system 1. Humans and animals have parts called organs. These organs help to meet the needs of the organisms. 2. Food gives us energy to move about, grow and stay alive. 3. The food we eat must be digested before our body can make use of it. When food is digested, it is broken down and changed into simple substances. 4. The organs in our body work together in order for digestion to be carried out. 5. Food is digested in the mouth, stomach and small intestine. 6. The teeth help us to chew and grind our food into small pieces. Our tongue helps to mix the food with saliva so that it is easy to swallow. 7. Food then goes down the esophagus into the stomach where it is partly digested. 8. The food then goes into the small intestine and completely digested. There are many blood vessels in the small intestine and digested food passes into the blood stream through these blood vessels and is carried throughout the body. 9. Undigested food goes into the large intestine. Water is removed from the undigested food and the waste is passed out of the body. 10. The cow has one stomach with four chambers. A cow is a ruminant, which means it chews the cud. 11. The grass that the cow eats is very coarse and so the cow regurgitates it and rechews it several times until it is soft and able to pass through the all four chambers and give the cow the nutrition it needs. 12. The cow and the human have the same digestive organs, which consists of, the mouth, esophagus, stomach, small intestine and large intestine. Learn the following meanings 1. Digestion – process by which the body changes food so it can be used to supply energy. 2. Esophagus – a muscular tube which connect the throat to the stomach. 3. Large intestine – a short, wide tube in which water is absorbed from undigested food. 4. Small intestine – a long coiled tube in which food is digested and absorbed. 5. Stomach – a muscular sac that stores food and help digest it Learn the digestive system diagram and functions Only study the mouth, esophagus, stomach, liver, small and large intestines.
