Transcript
Resources
Resource
 Something that is used
o Ex. Aluminum, wool, humans, etc
Renewable Resource
 Something that can be replaced or renewed
o Ex. Wool, trees, cows, etc
Non-renewable resource
 Something that cannot be replaced or renewed
o Ex. Fossil fuels, ores, minerals
Perpetual resources
 Something that is constant, “forever” in human time scales
o Ex. Sunlight, wind, waves, etc
How Species Interact
Predation
 One organism kills and eats another organism
Prey

Organism that gets eaten
o Ex. Cow, mouse, corn, etc
Predator
 Organism that does the eating
 Often limit the size of prey populations & the size of the prey
 Feed on old and weak (easiest to catch & most likely to die)
o Ex. Hawks, lions, humans, etc
Competition
 Relationship between species in which the different species compete for
the same resources
Parasitism
 Relationship between host and parasite
 One organism feeds off of another living organism
o Ex. Fleas and rats, mistletoe and trees, etc
Parasite
 Organism that lives in or on another organism without killing it
immediately
o Ex. Fleas, mistletoe, etc
Host


Organism that is used as food by another organism
If they do not lose the parasite they usually die of a disease brought
about by the parasite
o Ex. Rats, humans, elm trees
Mutualism
 Cooperative relationship between organism where both organisms benefit
o Ex. Eyebrow mites and humans, bacteria and termites, birds and
crocs
Commensalism
 Relationship where one animal benefits and the other isn’t harmed
o Ex. Remoras and shark
Ecosystem
Definition
 All organisms living in a specific area and the physical environment itself
 No clear boundaries
Biotic Factors
 Living parts of the ecosystem
Abiotic Factors
 Non-living parts of the ecosystem
Organism
 One individual living thing
Species
 Group of organisms that share common genes, look similar and are able
to reproduce together
Communities
 Interacting populations of different species
Biosphere
Many interacting communities
Habitat
 Place where organisms live, “address”
 Living and non-living parts

Niche

Organisms way of life, “profession”
How Ecosystems Work
Producer/Autotroph
 Makes its own food, usually in the form of sugar or starch
 Most autotrophs use sunlight for food
o Ex. Plants, algae, some bacteria
* Deep Sea Vents – ecosystem that does not require sunlight
- bacteria use chemicals from underwater volcanoes for food
Consumer
o Eat producers and/or other consumers
o Get energy from eating other things  indirect sunlight
Who Eats What
o Herbivores – plant eaters
o Carnivores – meat eaters
o Omnivores – mixed diet, eat every thing (plants & flesh)
o Decomposers - break down dead material
