Organ Systems
An Overview
Introduction
Your body is made up of over 60 trillion cells!
But, these cells normally don’t work alone.
They team up into larger groups to make
up part of a larger organisms… YOU!
Cells, Tissues and Organs
Two or more cells working together
to perform a task form a tissue.
e.g. epithelial, nerve, muscle, connective
Two or more tissues working together
to perform a task from an organ.
e.g. heart, brain, lungs, stomach, skin
Organ Systems
Many organs work together as a team!
Two or more different organs working to
perform a task form an organ system.
There are 10 organ systems in the body.
Digestive System
Main Function
To break down food
and absorb nutrients
into the body.
Main Organs
mouth, esophagus,
stomach, intestines
Circulatory System
Main Function
To transport nutrients
and other substances
around the body.
Main Organs
heart, blood,
blood vessels
Respiratory System
Main Function
To take in oxygen
and breath out
carbon dioxide.
Main Organs
nose, mouth, trachea,
lungs, diaphragm
Nervous System
Main Function
To send messages around
the body and to control
bodily functions.
Main Organs
brain, spinal cord,
nerves
Skeletal System
Main Function
To provide shape, support
and protection for the
body.
Main Organs
All of the bones in the
human body (206).
Muscular System
Main Function
To provide movement,
which includes moving
things through the body.
Main Organs
Muscles, tendons,
and ligaments
Immune System
Main Function
To destroy and remove
invading microbes
from the body.
Main Organs
white blood cells, spleen,
appendix, lymph nodes
Excretory System
Main Function
To remove waste
products from the body.
Main Organs
kidney, bladder,
urethra
Endocrine System
Main Function
To produce and release
hormones in the body
Main Organs
thyroid, pancreas, pituitary
& hypothalamus glands
Reproductive System
Main Function
To produce reproductive
cells in order to reproduce.
Main Organs
Male: testes, seminal
vesicles, penis
