An acrostic poem is one in which you choose a topic word and use each letter in that word as the
beginning of a sentence that tells something about the topic.
Here is an example of an acrostic poem for the word “CELL”
Cells are the basic units of structure and function in all living things.
Eukaryotic cells contain a nucleus and many other specialized cell parts.
Lysosomes are the organelles that secrete digestive enzymes.
Lipids arranged in a double layer create the cell’s membrane.
Directions/Evaluation:
You are to create an acrostic poem for the word “PHOTOSYNTHESIS”.
Use the following list of requirements to guide the completion of your project.
 Write or type the poem on a solid colored sheet of paper (no lines).
 Each letter must start a complete sentence that states an accurate fact about
photosynthesis. Each sentence must be at least 6 words in length.
 Each letter of the word “PHOTOSYNTHESIS” must stand out from the rest of the
sentence, either by size, color, font, etc.
 Use of vocabulary is varied and interesting. (Ex: Do not start both O’s with the same
word.)
 Work has been proofread and is free of spelling and grammatical errors.
 Finished product is neat and demonstrates student’s best work. (Ex: Stray marks
erased, paper is not crinkled, sentences are straight, etc.)
