Outstanding Marketing Teacher Program
Purpose, Eligibility, Nomination, Selection and Recognition
I.
PURPOSE:
A. The Academy of Marketing Science is dedicated to the professionalism of its Fellows and
the discipline of marketing. As such, its goal is one of leadership in the discipline. The
purposes of the Outstanding Marketing Teacher program are to recognize and reward
excellence in teaching and to provide a forum for outstanding teachers to share their
philosophy and pedagogy with colleagues.
II.
ELIGIBILITY:
A. All Fellows of the Academy of Marketing Science in good standing who have not been
recognized as AMS Outstanding Marketing Teachers in the past 10 years are eligible for
the Outstanding Marketing Teacher designation.
III.
SELECTION COMMITTEE:
A. The Outstanding Marketing Teacher Selection Committee will consist of a chair plus two
other members. Each committee member will be appointed for a one-year (renewable) term
by the Chair of the Board of Governors from among current board members. The Chair of
the Board of Governors is not eligible to serve on the Selection Committee.
IV. NOMINATIONS:
A. Fellows of the Academy may nominate other Fellows for the Outstanding Marketing
Teacher designation. Fellows may also nominate themselves.
B. The invitation to nominate persons for the Outstanding Marketing Teacher designation
shall appear on the AMS web site, in each issue of the AMS Quarterly, the annual
conference call for papers, and in other appropriate locations. Nomination must include, at
a minimum, the name, position, affiliation and address of the nominee and the nominator.
C. Nominations shall be submitted to the Chair of the Outstanding Marketing Teacher
Selection Committee.
D. The deadline for nominations will be the same as the deadline for submitting competitive
papers for the AMS annual conference.
E. During the week following the nomination deadline, the Chair of the Outstanding
Marketing Teacher Selection Committee will contact each nominee and invite him or her to
prepare a dossier for review by the Selection Committee.
F. Nominees who wish to be considered for designation as an Outstanding Marketing Teacher
must submit four sets of the following materials to the Chair of the Selection Committee by
December 1 of the year preceding the year that the new Outstanding Marketing Teacher
shall be designated:

A statement of teaching philosophy (limited to one page).
A condensed curriculum vita (limited to two pages).
One or two current course syllabi.
Two letters of support from academic colleagues.
A letter of support from the candidate’s department chair, dean or equivalent.
Supporting evidence of teaching excellence (limited to four pages).
Evidence of outstanding teaching may include descriptions of teaching techniques,
examples of creativity in the classroom, evidence of student learning and achievement,
application of technology in the teaching environment, student evaluations of teaching
performance, and letters of support from present or former students. However, nominees
may submit any material (subject to the specified page limits) that they feel provides
evidence of outstanding teaching. Long-term contributions to marketing education and
teaching innovations that are transportable to other instructors or institutions will be
weighed more heavily than other evidence of outstanding performance.
G. Nominees not selected as Outstanding Marketing Teachers who wish to be considered the
following year my re-use letters of support from academic colleagues one time for the
following year.
V.
SELECTION:
A. The Chair of the Outstanding Marketing Teacher Selection Committee shall distribute the
submitted dossiers to committee members during the week following December 1 for their
review.
B. Committee members (including the Chair) will review each nominee’s dossier and report
their recommendations to the Chair of the Selection Committee. The Chair of the Selection
Committee will report the results and make recommendations to the Chair of the Board of
Governors on or before January 4 of the year the designations will be awarded. A positive
recommendation will require a majority vote of the Committee. The Chair of the Board of
Governors will make final selection decisions and report the results of the selection process
to the Executive Council of the Academy of Marketing Science and the annual conference
chair(s) on or before January 15 of the year the designations will be awarded.
C. A maximum of four nominees will be designated as Outstanding Marketing Teachers at
any AMS annual conference. There may be years when no nominees are selected for
recognition as Outstanding Marketing Teachers.
VI. RECOGNITION
A. Recipients of the Outstanding Marketing Teacher designation shall be recognized formally
at the Academy’s annual conference.
B. Those receiving the Outstanding Marketing Teacher designation will:
1. receive a framed certificate and official recognition at the AMS annual awards
luncheon.
2. make a 10-15 minute presentation on teaching philosophy or pedagogy in a session
called, “Outstanding Marketing Teaching” along with the other educators selected
3. publish a one-page abstract on teaching philosophy or pedagogy in the conference
proceedings.
VII.
SPONSORSHIP
A. The Outstanding Marketing Teacher program is endowed by a $10,000 gift from
South-Western College Publishing Co.
