STRONTIUM TITANATE
SrTiO3
Strontium titanate has the perovskite structure found in many
oxides and fluorides of type ABX3. This is the atom packing achieved
when the large cation is 1.0 – 1.4Å radius and has 12-fold coordination,
while the smaller cation has a radius of 0.45 – 0.75Å, with the coordination of 6. The ideal structure is cubic, but there are many
instances of tetragonal and monoclinic distortions.
The structure of strontium titanate illustrated by this model was
reported by A. Abramov Yu et al., Acta Cryst., B51, 942, (1995). The
cubic cell has the cell edge a = 3.8996Å and space group Pm3m. The
Sr atoms are 12-coordinate to O at 2.76Å and the Ti atoms are 6coordinate to O at 1.95Å.
The model shows 2 x 2 x 2 unit cells and contains 89 balls and
204 rods.
