The Renaissance Man (or Woman) Although Renaissance means “rebirth,” to be a “Renaissance Man” means to be a person who excels in many facets of life. For example, Renaissance men often were into politics, architecture, math, writing, multiple sciences, and of course art. Sounds like a pretty good thing to be. Well why don’t you hop into the class time machine and go back to the days of the Renaissance and ask the masters how you too can become a Renaissance Man. Alright, let’s start out in Italy and talk to the ultimate Renaissance man to figure what frame of mind we should get in, to get all renaissance-y. Father of the Renaissance (It’s on your movie guide): Intellectual movement and what it means: Now let’s find out how to run a city. Find out who you should talk to in the following cities and ask them how they came to power. Milan: Venice: Florence: Ok, now go see the guy that wrote the book on Renaissance politics (I mean literately, he wrote the book on Renaissance politics)…no pun intended. Author: What did he say about politics: Book: Another Italian writer wrote kind of a “how-to” book of his own. This was a “how-to” for your soul. Author: Book: Storyline: Enough with writing, let’s go to people who actually made stuff. Let’s find an Italian architect. Architect: Building: Inspiration for design: Okay, you’ve heard their names as Ninja Turtles; let’s find out who they really were. Go ask the following people their philosophies on art, and any major masterpieces they created. Leonardo: Donatello: Michelangelo: Raphael: Before you leave Italy, let’s check out one more guy, who today would be a double-threat in nerd-dom, in both science and math. Scientist: (Need a hint- Female + Chicken Verb + O) What did he find out: Wow, you spent a long time in Italy, must have been the food (by the way, they don’t bring you the bill until you ask for it.) Now, you should head north and talk to some non –Italians for their take on the Renaissance. Durer Profession: Most known for: Gutenberg Profession: Most known for: Chaucer Profession: Most known for: de Pizan Profession: Most known for: van Eyck Profession: Most known for: Copernicus Profession: Most known for: Kepler Profession: Most known for: After all that, you should be an expert on the Renaissance, in fact you are probably a “Renaissance man” yourself, and so this question will be easy. Looking at the multiple facets of life that were important in the Renaissance explain how Europe was changing, how are ideas about society and the individual evolving? (Hey, it is okay to use examples from this paper, that is what we would call learning.)
