Science Study Guide – Space
Students are responsible for:
1) The planets in our solar system, in order. We live in the Milky Way
galaxy. Be able to give a fact about 4 of the planets, not including
Earth
2) What a day on a planet really is (how long it takes to make one
complete revolution on its axis
3) What a year on a planet really is (how long it takes to make a complete
orbit of the sun
4) How long it takes the moon to orbit the Earth, and that different
planets have different amount of moons. For example, Jupiter has 63.
5) Solar and lunar eclipses
6) Be able to write about and prove why they are in favour or against
Canada’s involvement in the space program (give 3 reasons, but be able
to give 3 reasons on the other side of the argument)
7) How space is different from life on Earth (extremely cold, no gravity,
no air, no sound) and can be challenging
8) Space vocabulary: comets, asteroids, natural/artificial satellites,
meteors, meteorites, orbit
9) Objects which reflect light (moon, planets) vs. objects that emit light
(the sun, stars)
10) The larger the planet, star, etc. the more gravity is created. The
smaller the planet, moon, etc. less gravity
11) The phases of the moon
12) Be able to write a little bit about what the following technologies are:
the I.S.S., the Mars Rover, the Hubble Space Telescope, NASA
