Low X/Y divergence in four pairs of papaya sex
Low X/Y divergence in four pairs of papaya sex

... few are heteromorphic. The homomorphic sex chromosomes of papaya show features of incipient sex chromosome evolution. We investigated the features of paired X- and Y-specific bacterial artificial chromosomes (BACs), and estimated the time of divergence in four pairs of sex-linked genes. We report th ...

Evolution of the Actin Gene Family in Testate Lobose Amoebae
Evolution of the Actin Gene Family in Testate Lobose Amoebae

... The evolution of actin gene families is characterized by independent expansions and contractions across the eukaryotic tree of life. Here, we assess diversity of actin gene sequences within three lineages of the genus Arcella, a free-living testate (shelled) amoeba in the Arcellinida. We established ...

Extending the Implications of Myriad to Ambry â•fiThe New

... DNA naturally has the ability to make copies of itself. This is critical when cells divide, because each new cell needs to have an exact copy of the DNA from the old cell. DNA makes copies of itself and builds proteins through the processes of Transcription and Translation. Transcription is a proces ...

... Single Nucleotide Polymorphisms (SNPs) are DNA sequence variations that occur in the genome sequence when a single nucleotide is altered. The genetic code is specified by the four nucleotide letters: A (Adenine), C (Cytosine), T (Thymine), and G (Guanine). SNP occurs when a single nucleotide, such a ...

Cre-Lox recombination

In the field of genetics, Cre-Lox recombination is known as a site-specific recombinase technology, and is widely used to carry out deletions, insertions, translocations and inversions at specific sites in the DNA of cells. It allows the DNA modification to be targeted to a specific cell type or be triggered by a specific external stimulus. It is implemented both in eukaryotic and prokaryotic systems. The system consists of a single enzyme, Cre recombinase, that recombines a pair of short target sequences called the Lox sequences. This system can be implemented without inserting any extra supporting proteins or sequences. The Cre enzyme and the original Lox site called the LoxP sequence are derived from bacteriophage P1.Placing Lox sequences appropriately allows genes to be activated, repressed, or exchanged for other genes. At a DNA level many types of manipulations can be carried out. The activity of the Cre enzyme can be controlled so that it is expressed in a particular cell type or triggered by an external stimulus like a chemical signal or a heat shock. These targeted DNA changes are useful in cell lineage tracing and when mutants are lethal if expressed globally. The Cre-Lox system is very similar in action and in usage to the FLP-FRT recombination system.
