Mendelian Genetics Vocabulary Answer Key
Term
Definition
Heredity
Is the passing of physical characteristics from
parents to offspring
Trait
Each different form of a characteristic, such
as stem height or seed color, that an
organism can pass on to its offspring through
its genes.
Genetics
The scientific study of heredity.
Fertilization
The joining of a sperm cell and an egg cell to
form a new organism.
Purebred
A purebred organism is the offspring of many
generations that have the same trait.
Gene
The factors that control a trait; a segment of
DNA on a chromosome that codes for a
specific trait.
Alleles
Are the different forms of a gene.
Dominant
An allele whose trait always shows up in the
organism when the allele is present.
Recessive
An allele that is hidden whenever the
dominant allele is present
Hybrid
An organism that has two different alleles for
a trait; an organism that is heterozygous for a
particular trait.
