The Roman Republic
I.
The Beginnings of Rome
A.
According to legend, two twin brothers, Romulus and Remus,
founded the city of Rome and named it for Romulus.
B.
The story of the twin brothers is a myth, but the city became the
center of a great empire.
C.
Ruled first by kings, Rome was later governed by the Senate.
D.
Republican Rome was ruled by representatives of the Roman
elite.
E.
Early Rome was divided into to classes: patricians and
plebeians.
F.
The struggle between these two classes resulted in changes that
made Rome great.

By electing their own leaders, called tribunes, the plebeians
forced their voice into government.

Similar to ancient Athens, slaves and women had few rights in
Rome.
II.
The Roman Republic Grows
