History Unit 3: Chapter 11 (Study Skill: Outlining) The Roman Republic I. The Beginnings of Rome A. According to legend, two twin brothers, Romulus and Remus, founded the city of Rome and named it for Romulus. B. The story of the twin brothers is a myth, but the city became the center of a great empire. C. Ruled first by kings, Rome was later governed by the Senate. D. Republican Rome was ruled by representatives of the Roman elite. E. Early Rome was divided into to classes: patricians and plebeians. F. The struggle between these two classes resulted in changes that made Rome great. G. By electing their own leaders, called tribunes, the plebeians forced their voice into government. H. Similar to ancient Athens, slaves and women had few rights in Rome. II. The Roman Republic Grows A. Surrounded by enemies during the early years, Rome conquered other lands and peoples thus building a great empire. B. Within a hundred years, Rome conquered nearly all the land surrounding the Mediterranean Sea. C. Based on the army, early Roman society built their republic into a mighty empire. III. How Romans Governed A. It was an honor to belong to the Roman army. B. Roman troops and magistrates were set up in each new province of conquered people. C. Conquered people benefited from the new government. D. Conquered people also gained a better style of life. E. By making it in people’s best interest to be loyal to the Roman Republic, the Romans were building a strong, united society. IV. The Republic Faces the Future A. The power of the Senate grew along with the republic. B. Army leaders became wealthy as a result of the successes of the army. C. Roman men gained important positions in society by being successful soldiers. D. The leading members of Roman society knew that the Roman economy, system of government, and society relied on the continued success of the army. E. The power of the army became a major problem facing the Romans after 100 B.C.
