Many of these ideas have become the “self-evident” truths of western society. What are these ideas? How are revolutionary ideas related to the events discussed in previous units? How did ideas motivate people to initiate or support revolution? Is the legacy of a revolution a new society or merely a disrupted era of history? Which ideas from the early revolutionary era seem most significant to you in the 21st century? Tuesday, Oct. 6 Class: 1) Collect and check Research Paper sheets. 2) Read “Revolution in North America” (536-537). 3) Begin chart comparing the American and French revolutions. HW: Read, highlight and margin note, “Two Enlightenment Views.” List 3 achievements and 3 failures of Enlightenment ideas (best of all possible worlds…) beginning with “Enlightenment Education.” 2 Wednesday, Oct. 7 Class: 1) Discuss: On what points do Rousseau and Wollstonecraft agree? Disagree? 2) What warning signs of eminent revolution did political and intellectual French leaders fail to recognize? 3) Continue chart comparing the American and French revolutions.
