SURRENDER!
The end of major fighting in the Civil War came in April 1865 and involved the decision-making and
troops of Union General Ulysses S. Grant and Confederate General Robert E. Lee (see below).
Answer the questions about the last days of the war, as we watch the clip from Ken Burns’ “Civil War“.
1.
With the effects of total war and the blockade, the Confederate war effort and government began to
crumble. Identify the evidence from the video clip:
2.
Like the Union, the Confederacy resorted to its own “desperate measures.” What were they?
3.
Where did the decisive blow to the Confederacy occur? Why?
4.
The clip includes excerpts of letters between Grant and General Lee. How would you describe their
correspondence?
5.
Finally, Lee and Grant met in the McLean home. Had they met before?
6.
How were Grant and Lee dressed?
7.
List the surrender terms to which Lee and Grant agreed:
8.
In your opinion, were these terms harsh or lenient (easy)?
9.
After Lee and Grant’s discussion ended, Union soldiers began to celebrate. How did Grant respond?
10.
The terms of the surrender were carried out three days later. What happened then?
11.
How does the surrender at Appomattox Courthouse and the words of Abraham Lincoln in the Second
Inaugural to “bind up the nation’s wounds” compare to the Union’s wartime “desperate measures?”
