After capturing and burning Atlanta,
Sherman’s Union army of 70,000 men
marched from Atlanta to Savannah, Georgia
destroying everything in its path. Became
known as the “ burnt country “ in Georgia. He
captured Savannah in December,1864 and
gave it to Lincoln as a Christmas gift.



On April 7, 1865, Robert E. Lee asked for a
meeting with Union General US Grant. Facing
a hopeless situation, Lee surrendered his
Confederate army to Grant.
This for all practical purposes ended the
American Civil War
A week later Abraham Lincoln was
assassinated in Washington.
