I.
Introduction
A. What is Islam? Religion of Muslims; lands that are Muslim; a
command—“submit” to Allah (God).
B. Where is Islam? Stretches from North Africa through the Middle
East to Indonesia.
C. What is Arabia Like? ¾ desert, 5/6 people were Nomads, 1/6
were merchants, world’s largest Peninsula.
II.
Muhammed—Prophet and Ruler (570-632 A.D.)
A. What are the important events in the life of Muhammed? 25 year
old camel driver met Khadija, married her, and became a
merchant.
B. What is the significance of the Hegira? (622 A.D.) “Flight” or
escape of Muhammed from Mecca to Medina. Year one for
Muslims. “Anno Domini,” in the year of our Lord, “Anno
Hegira” in the year of the Hegira.
C. How did Muhammed unite Arabia? By leaving the Kaaba
building and stone and requiring a pilgrimage to Mecca at least
once a year.
What are the major Islamic beliefs?
A. What are the Five Pillars of Islam? There is 1 belief and 4
duties.
1. What is the major belief? Belief in 1 God (Allah)—
Monotheism, just as Jews and Christians believe in 1 God.
No idols.
2. What are the four duties? Almsgiving (giving to the poor),
pray 5 times a day facing Mecca, Fast during Ramadan,
visit Mecca at least once in a lifetime—if able (pilgrimage).
B. What are other major beliefs? No pork, no alcohol, no pictures,
belief in angels, heaven and hell.
C. What is the Koran? The Qur’an is the Holy Book of the
Muslims.
Arabian Conquest and Rule of the Middle East
A. What are the major divisions of Islam?
1. Sunnites—about 90 percent of all Muslims. Believed the
strongest man in the tribe should succeed Muhammed.
Followers of Abu Bakr, 1st Caliph, or religious ruler of
Muslims.
2. Shiites—about 10 percent of all Muslims. Believed in
bloodline leadership. Followers of Ali-cousin of
Muhammed.
3. Other sects—Whirling dervishes, and Sufi Muslims.

Gabriel: Angel who dictated verses of the Koran to Mohammed (his secretary-Abu Bakr,
wrote down the verses)
Ramadan: 9th month—Fast.
Kaaba: cube shaped building in Mecca.
Allah: God
Abraham: Father of 3 Religions—Christianity, Judaism, and Islam.
Ishmael: Abraham’s 1st son—father of the Arabs.
Hagar: Mother of Ishmael, and servant of Sarah.
Khadija: Wife of Muhammed. She was 40—he was 25—wealthy widow of a merchant.
Fatima: daughter of Khadija and Mohammed.
Ali: married Fatima. Son-in-law and cousin of Mohammed.
Abu Bakr: Secretary of Muhammed—wrote down the verses of the Koran—became 1st
Caliph (leader) after Muhammed died.
Mosque: Muslim place of worship—like a church to a Christian.
Minaret: Tall tower beside mosque where the muezzin calls the faithful to prayer.
Muezzin: Crier; calls faithful to prayer 5 times a day.
