ENGLISH FOR LAW ENFORCEMENT UNIT 6 – DRUGS AND ALCOHOL Ability – a skill, sth a person can do Abolish - to end an activity or custom officially Addictive - An addictive drug is one which you cannot stop taking once you have started Co-ordination – a person’s control of how s/he moves Corrupt (v) - to make someone or something become dishonest or immoral Counseling - the job or process of listening to someone and giving them advice about their problems Derive from sth - to come from something Differentiate - show or find the difference between things which are compared Dilate – to get bigger, or more open (dilation) Dope - informal cannabis, or, more generally, any type of illegal drug Euphoric high - extremely happy and excited and not thinking or behaving normally because of taking drugs Fine - an amount of money that has to be paid as a punishment for not obeying a rule or law Giggle – to laugh in a nervous or excited way Harmful - causing harm Impair – to make sth weaker or less effective Influence - the power to have an effect on people or things, or a person or thing that is able to do this Insignificant - not important or thought to be valuable, especially because of being small Intent - when you want and plan to do something Keep up with - do whatever is necessary to stay level or equal with that person or thing Medical treatment - the attempted remediation of a health problem, usually following a diagnosis Money-laundering - the crime of moving money that has been obtained illegally through banks and other businesses to make it seem as if the money has been obtained legally Ofence - an illegal act; a crime Opioid - Any substance, either natural or synthetic, that behaves in the body like an opium-derived drug. Opioids are potent painkillers. Painkiller - medicine used to reduce or remove physical pain Possession - when you have or own something Possessor - someone who owns something Potent - very powerful, forceful or effective Pupil (of an eye) – the circular black area in the centre of your eye, through which light enters Reintroduce - to put something into use, operation or a place again Sedative - a drug used to calm a person or animal or to make them sleep Sentence - a punishment given by a judge in court to a person or organization after they have been found guilty of doing something wrong Slur- to pronounce the sounds of a word in a way which is not clear, uncontrolled or wrong Smuggling - to take things or people to or from a place secretly and often illegally Stimulant - a substance, such as a drug, which makes the mind or body more active Stoned - slang experiencing the effects of a drug, such as cannabis Supply - to provide something that is wanted or needed, often in large quantities and over a long period of time Tolerant - willing to accept behaviour and beliefs which are different from your own, although you might not agree with or approve of them Trafficker - a person who trades in illegal goods, especially drugs Trafficking - to buy and sell goods illegally Weave - to go or make a path by moving quickly and changing direction often, especially to avoid hitting things.
