Key Vocabulary for Drug – Use and Abuse unit 1. Abuse – Using a drug in some way that causes a problem for yourself or for the people around you. 2. Addiction – Physical and/or psychological dependence on a drug from habitual use of the drug 3. Adverse effect – Unfavorable, negative reaction 4. Alcoholism – addiction due to physical dependence on alcohol 5. Analgesic – Drug to relieve pain by suppressing the sensation. 6. Antacid – Drug to neutralize stomach acid and relieve pain and discomfort in the digestive tract. 7. Antibiotic – Used to treat infections caused by bacteria or fungus. 8. Antidepressant - A drug that reduces the symptoms of depression. Improves mood. 9. Antihistamine – Drug used to relieve many allergy symptoms 10. Anxiety – Uneasiness, fear. 11. Barbiturate – A drug used to treat sleeplessness. Street name – “Downers” 12. Caffeine – A drug found in substances such as coffee, cola drinks. Stimulates the central nervous system. 13. Cannabis sativa – The plant from which marijuana, hashish and hash oil are made. 14. Carbon monoxide – poisonous gas that prevents oxygen from going into and traveling in the blood. 15. Cirrhosis – The cells of the liver are injured or die and replaced with fibred tissue. Caused by the over use of alcohol. 16. Cocaine – Fine white powder that can be sniffed, smoked or injected for a high. Very limited medical use – mostly just a street drug. 17. Drug – Any substance, other then food, that is put into or onto your body and changes the way your body works or mind works. 18. Ethyl Alcohol – The drug found in drinking alcohol. Depresses or slows the CNS, slows the heartbeat, breathing, and thinking processes. 19. Hallucination – False perception of something that is not really there. 20. Hangover – is the pain and discomfort following a period of intoxication. Begins 8-12 hours after excessive consumption of alcohol. 21. Heroin – Fine powder originally developed as a pain killer, but now used more illegally for a high. Very addictive and dangerous. 22. “High” – The rush or reaction, as a drug. Can be a sense of well being and calm or a surge of pleasure, intensified senses or increased alertness. 23. Illegal Drug – Drug that cannot be legally sold or bought in Canada or a prescription drug that is sold or bought illegally 24. Inhalant – A substance breathed in or sniffed to produce an effect of dizziness, relaxation and well being. 25. Interaction – Side effect when two or more drugs are mixed. 26. Sedative – A drug that produces a calming effect; may also cause sleep. 27. Toxic – Poisonous 28. Intoxication – Alcohol is consumed faster than the body can dispose of it. The liver cannot metabolize or break down more than one drink an hour. The build up of alcohol in the blood affects the functioning of the brain. 29. Laxative – Drug to stimulate bowel action or to relieve constipation. 30. LSD – A street drug sold in many different forms. Is a hallucination causing drug. No current medial use. 31. Marijuana – Crushed flowers, leaves and stems of the cannabis plant. Can be physically and psychologically damaging. 32. Morphine – Drug used as a painkiller 33. Nicotine – A poisonous substance found in tobacco smoke. 34. OTC – over the counter drugs, these can be purchased without a prescription. 35. PCP – Street drug sold in many forms. Is a hallucination causing drug. 36. Prescription – A written direction from a doctor to a pharmacist who prepares and dispenses the drug. 37. Tolerance – Body becomes accustomed to the usual dose of a drug so greater amounts must be taken to achieve the same effect. 38. Side Effect – An unwanted effect produced by a drug in addition to the desired effect. 39. Tranquilizer – Drug that produces a calming effect; prescribed for extreme anxiety or tension. 40. Withdrawal – The reaction to stopping use of some drug. Can be physical or psychological.
