DNA Mutations
Let’s make a protein!!!
You will be given a sequence of DNA. Using this sequence, please transcribe the DNA into mRNA. Once the mRNA is transcribed go
ahead and translate the mRNA into the correct amino acid sequence. Use the chart provided to find the amino acid that correlates with
the correct colored tack. Once you have your amino acid sequence place them on the tuber and fold the tuber according to the laws of
chemistry, like I have showed you. Draw what the tuber looks like. A change in the DNA sequence, of a gene is called a mutation.
Mutations occur in nature every .000001 to .0000001 mutations per base pair per generation. When a mutation occurs that changes
the protein the trait changes. Let’s examine what happens to the protein when a mutation occurs.

1. What is a mutation?
2. What did the insertion mutation do to the DNA sequence?
3.Did the insertion mutation change the protein?
4.What might happen to the function of the protein?
5. What is a phenotype?
6. Would the insertion mutation cause a phenotypic change? Explain your answer.
