BSC 307 5-E Model Lesson Plan
Title:
Grade Level:
Cell City: Building Utopia
9
Objectives:
TSWBT…
- Relate the organelles of a cell to the components of a city
- Describe the function of the individual organelles in relation to the city
analogy
- Discuss their reasons for identifying the organelle as a specific city
component
- Construct a blueprint of their cell city identifying analogous organelles
Illinois Learning Standards:
Stage I 12A: Students who meet the standard know and apply concepts that
explain how living things function, adapt, and change. Descriptor 2: Apply
scientific inquiries or technological designs to analyze the cellular organelles
and functions, using different microscopic techniques, explaining functional
processes chemically and structurally (e.g., osmotic, active and facilitated
transport, enzyme action and protein/lipid/carbohydrate metabolism).
Engagement:
The students will watch a video approximately 5 minutes long on a cell analogy.
In the video, the cell is compared to a classroom made using Leggo characters.
In talking to their teacher, the Leggo students compare structures in the
classroom to cell organelles.
After watching the video, the students are asked to take a minute and think of
other everyday analogies of organelles.
Exploration:
The students are asked to answer questions that relate to the video shown at
the beginning of the lesson.
The students are allowed to partner in groups of two to collaborate on the cell
organelle and its description compared to the city component. The students are
allowed to reference their textbook if they need assistance identifying the
organelles and their function.
Explanation:
As a class, the students will discuss their answers for the organelles they
matched to the city component. The teacher will have a PowerPoint to enhance
the discussion by providing correct analogies. The students will also be provided
with a list of the organelles to write down relative information on each organelle
throughout the discussion.
Extension:
The students will create an analogy of their own. The descriptions that were
generated along with the information that they gained from the whole class
discussion. They will have to label the cell organelle that corresponds to the
analogy.
Evaluation(Assessment Strategies):
The student will be assessed on their participation during the explanation phase
and also based on the completeness and accuracies of the descriptions.
Rationale:
Having the students watch the short video clip comparing a cell to a classroom
gets the students thinking about how a cell can be compared to other everyday
structures, in particular a city. In contrast to lecturing on cell organelles, telling
the students that a cell is analogous to a city, and moving on in the content. This
way the students see a cell in a different way and have multiple structures to
compare the organelles to, to increase the transfer of material. This lesson
relates to the ILS Stage 12A Descriptor 2 by allowing the students at analyze the
cell organelles and the functions they serve in the cell and also, related to the
analogy of a city.
