Banking and Finance Syllabus

I.
Course Description (Prerequisite: None).
This course is a part of the “Business, Management, Marketing and Technology”
Career Pathways that the State of Michigan has defined. This two-semester course
is offered to introduce students to personal finance and development of basic
banking skills. Banking and finance is designed to prepare high school students to
make wise financial decisions in personal situations. The course will help students
realize that they are already making financial decisions and demonstrate to them
how their decisions affect their future including personal budgets, interest rates, and
debt to income ratios. This course will prepare students in performing a wide variety
of customer services in banks, insurance agencies, savings and loan companies,
and other related enterprises. Students will apply today’s technology to gather
information, solve problems, and present information. The evaluation for this course
is based on attendance, class participation, a daily journal entries, small group
project, quizzes, and test.
This course is articulated with Davenport University. A fourth year math credit can
be earned with successful completion of this course.

Goal/Purpose of the Course
The goal of this course is to provide students with knowledge about personal
finance. This course will include instruction in communications and public relations
skills, business equipment operation, and technical skills applicable to the methods
and operations of specific financial or insurance services.
III.
Objectives
Upon completion of this course the students will be able to:
A. Define personal financial planning.
B. Name the six steps of financial planning.
C. Identify factors that affect personal financial decisions.
D. Develop a career plan.
E. Complete a portfolio including a resume.
F. Organize financial records. Develop a personal balance sheet and cash flow
statement.
G. Identify types of financial services.
H. Investigate careers in finance.
I. Compare the costs and benefits of different savings plans.
J. Compare the costs and benefits of different types of checking accounts.
K. Identify ways to manage debt problems.
L. Learn basic Member Service Representative (teller) skills.
M. Participate in an interview with an interview team of banking officials.
N. Increase knowledge of financial products and services.
O. Identify and demonstrate competency of financial terms such as balance sheet,
income statement, financial ratios and debt to income.
P. Complete an online simulation that involves the banking profession.
Q. Learn what it means to be a member of a bank or credit union, as well as its
advantages and perks.
R. Compete in the following banking skills: balance a cash drawer, make change,
and cash checks.

Course Requirements
A. Students will be required to be responsible for coming to class with the following
materials: pencil/pen, paper, and completed homework assignments.
B. Classroom procedures and rules will be practiced by each student as explained
in class.
C. Students have one day for each absence, plus one additional day, to make up
work missed or to make arrangements with me to make up the work.
D. Students must comply with the terms of the Acceptable Use Agreement on file
with the school.
4th Year Math Credit
A. Students will be required to receive a 70% in the math category to earn a 4 th year
math credit.

Articulation
A. Students will be required to have an overall B average to receive articulation.

Evaluation/Assessment of Student Performance
General Expectation
Students will be expected to use class time efficiently. Daily assignments will be due on the
day assigned, unless otherwise instructed. Effective communication between the student
and instructor is encouraged. Grades will be posted periodically so students will be aware
of their progress.

Deduction of 1 point for breaking class rules

Special Rules
The Internet will be used only for research and completion of class projects. Personal emails and IM’s are not considered acceptable Internet use during class time. Games are not
allowed.
