SINOPSISI / SYNOPSES 14/3 UDC 336.71:061.1EU ZBORNIK ZNANSTVENIH RAZPRAV – VOLUME LXX, 2010, PP. 7–40 Dr. Meta Ahtik Information Asymmetry in Banking of Slovenia and other EU Members Presence of information asymmetry and other market failures is one of basic reasons for existence of financial intermediaries. Their presence reduces the level of market imperfections, although it cannot eliminate it. Banks have to deal with problems connected to information asymmetry in relationship with their debtors as well as with their creditors and shareholders. Structure of their assets represents an outcome of selection and monitoring procedure of their investment, which also determines the preparedness of their creditors and equity providers to entrust them with funds. Article looks into banking sector characteristics, such as average bank size, banking network, bank ownership, liquidity, capitalization, profitability in order to assess presence of information asymmetry in Slovenian as compared with European Union and euro area banking sectors.
