Why was the Haitian earthquake so deadly?
Where is Haiti and where was the epicentre?



Using your atlas mark the following onto a blank map of the Caribbean:
South America, Mexico, Cuba, Haiti, The Dominican Republic, Puerto
Rico and Bahamas.
Give your map a title.
Using the maps you have been given – add plate boundaries to your
map, as well as the names of the tectonic plates involved. Ensure you
label the fault on which the earthquake occurred (Enriquillo-Plaintain
Garden fault) and mark the location of the epicentre.
What caused the earthquake to happen?




Describe what an earthquake is and how it occurs.
Explain why Haiti gets earthquakes.
On the diagram the plate boundary is referred to as a transform
boundary – what do we call this boundary in class? Make sure you use
that name in your explanation.
Listen to the news report. Do you disagree with any of the explanation
given? How would you improve the explanation? What terminology
(keywords) do you think should be used?
Who was affected?

Write a short paragraph describing how many people were affected
and how they were affected.
When did the earthquake happen?


Add the time of the earthquake to your map.
Do you think the death toll was affected by the time of day that the
earthquake occurred? Explain your answer.
Why was the death toll so high?






What physical characteristics of the earthquake made the earthquake
so bad? [hint: think about location, epicentre, focus and magnitude]
Add some information from the ‘Shake Map’ to your sketch map.
Explain how this information effects how much damage an earthquake
does.
Complete the development table using the CIA World Factbook
Using the information from your table describe how developed Haiti is.
How might Haiti’s development level impacted upon the death toll?
Watch the Haiti’s history video – How is Haiti’s history a contributing
factor to the death toll?
Watch the multiple Hazard video – What is a multiple hazard location?
How might the fact Haiti is a multiple Hazard location have impacted on
the death toll positively and negatively?
Now answer the question: Why was the Haitian earthquake so deadly?
