Developing LEDC Resilience to Earthquakes
Key Assessment 1
Plate Tectonics
Task
You are working for the government in Haiti and have
been asked to prepare the nation for the next big
earthquake, which scientists believe will be one created
by subduction on the destructive plate margin to the
north of the island.
You have complete freedom over how you do this, but
you only have a budget appropriate to the poorest nation
in the Western Hemisphere (the entire country’s wealth is
estimated in the region of $10 billion or just $1000 for
each of its 10 million people). You may consider how Less
Economically Developed Countries (LEDCs), such as Haiti,
potentially increase the resources available to them
following an earthquake, in your plans.
You should write a report advising the government of the strategy that they
should adopt before, during and after an earthquake.
The following things should feature in your report:
You should consider the four main options for earthquake management, which are
prediction, planning, preparation and response, although you may decide not to do all of
them.
You should learn from the lessons of the past – how was Haiti affected by earthquakes in
the past, especially in the January 2010 quake and since?
You should consider how you communicate your plans to the people who need to know,
such as the rest of the government, planners, architects and the general public. For a level
6 you MUST create a prototype of at least one of these methods e.g. a model, a media
commercial etc.
You must use at least one graph and one map, ideally a Geographical information System
(GIS) such as Google Earth, where you can either show useful information from the past
and/or put your new ideas on to the map to prove that the situation will be better next
time.
The resources available to you are available in this booklet, which should not be written on,
and/or on Moodle, where you can edit them on your computer and use them in digital media or
print them off. The resources are:

which will help you. IMPORTANT – FOLLOW THE INSTRUCTIONS GIVEN TO YOU ON THE STUDENT
CRITERIA SHEET. AIM AS HIGH AS YOU POSSIBLY CAN.
Example structure – This should enable you to gain a level 6, if used in conjunction with the
criteria. You are still encouraged to take your own approach to this report, but make sure that
you meet all of the criteria on the other sheet.

of managing earthquakes)?
Where is the area that which you will protect and what is it like?

What happened in the last big quake and why?
What will you be doing to improve the situation next time?
Have these ideas been used before anywhere and with what success?
Create a prototype of an idea that you have had
Consider ideas that may not be practical
What have you done and thought of to ensure that the ideas are popular and good for the
area
Are there any issues that you face in delivering your plan?
Conclusion
Summarise the various ideas, explaining how they will be more successful in helping the
area than past approaches
Use evidence to prove your points and refer back to your aim to remind the government
that your ideas will achieve it
