Overview
 Organisms obtain energy in a process called
cellular respiration.
 The equation for cellular respiration is the
opposite of the equation for photosynthesis.
 Label the reactants & products below.

 Takes place in the cytoplasm
 Glucose is broken down
 Anaerobic (without oxygen)
 Glucose enters the cell by active transport
 Enzymes break it down into pyruvate
 Net result = 2 ATP
 Precedes aerobic
respiration

Purpose: Breaks down the pyruvate from
glycolysis to produce molecules used in the
electron transport chain.
Location: Mitochondria
Products: 6 CO2
