Raised by an uncle.
Was shepherd among Bedouins.
Became a successful merchant.
Marries Khadja at 25.
At 40 voices to him “Proclaim” the voice was the angel Gabriel.
Devotes his life to spreading the Islam.
Islam meaning “submission”.
622 he leaves Mecca in fear for his life.
Goes to Yathrib renamed Medina meaning city of the prophet.
622 is the first year of the Muslim calendar.
Hijra- journey from Mecca to Yathrib.
Muhammad returns in triumph to Mecca and destroys the idols.
Muhammad tried to unite Arabs.
632 Muhammad dies.
Abu Bakr to takes over after Muhammad’s death.
This immediately splits the religion into two different denominations.
One being Sunni and the other being Shia.
Islam was a simple religion that allowed for the practice of other
religions with the paying of a tax. At first, Islam promoted women’s
rights. There was no hierarchy to the religion at first, however within
