The Future of Carbon Capture and Storage - 6th Edition
Description:
The 6th Edition of The Future of Carbon Capture and Storage report is a 55-page overview of the
opportunities for carbon capture and storage (CCS) to reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions.
A global consensus has formed on the need for government intervention to reduce GHGs, particularly
carbon dioxide (CO2), in order to fight climate change. While there is some potential for switching to carbonfree methods of generation, coal and natural gas will be a part of the generation mix for a long time. So
methods of reducing CO2 from generating plants must be developed.
The report aims to provide the reader with a thorough understanding of CCS and how it can mitigate CO2. It
also aims to provide a look at the implementation options for CCS. The report focuses specifically on the
needs of the electric power industry, providing the information necessary for industry participants to start
moving forward with participation in CCS opportunities.
The scope of the report is to provide an understanding of the current global concern over climate change.
This is accomplished by describing what climate change is, identifying the factors causing it to occur,
evaluating its impact on society, and discussing what is being done to counteract it. As CCS is one of the
major methods for counteracting climate change, the report defines what CCS is, evaluates the safety of
storing CO2, identifies current uses of CCS, and evaluates the potential of CCS.
The specific focus of the report then shifts to a discussion of the technologies associated with CCS,
comparing and contrasting the various options for implementing the steps in the CCS process. The
economics of CCS are then evaluated to identify major factors that impact them, as well as to provide a
range of costs for implementation and operation of CCS.
Finally, the report identifies the major efforts being undertaken by both government and industry to
promote CCS. Each initiative is described in terms of objective, participants, activities, and results.
