PsychologyDepartmentColloquium Dr.DarylCameron UniversityofIowa Motivation,Capacity,andtheLimitsofEmpathy Empathy,ortheabilitytosharewhatothersfeel,isconsideredbymany philosophersandscientiststobefoundationaltohumanmorality.Empathycan facilitatepro‐socialoutcomessuchascharity,cooperation,andtolerance.Yet empathyappearstofailinmanycases:itislessresponsivetosufferingoflarge numbers(e.g.,genocidesandnaturaldisasters)andout‐groups(e.g.,drugaddicts). Accordingtosome,this“darkside”ofempathymakesitanunreliablebasisfor moraldecisionsandpublicpolicy.Inthistalk,Iwillpresentevidence thattheseapparentlimitsofempathycanresultfromstrategicchoicesto avoidcostsofempathy.Iwillpresentevidencethatmotivationtoavoid empathycanexplain“compassioncollapse”forlargenumbersofvictimsandthe dehumanizationofstigmatizedout‐groups.Iwillalsopresentevidencethatpeople generallyviewempathyaseffortful,whichmotivatesempathyavoidance.Iwill closebydiscussingimplicationsforthecomplexrelationshipbetweenempathyand morality.Insum,empathymayonlybeaslimitedaswewantittobe.
