Spring Academic Program for International ENgineering
Students
ICAI-SAPIENS
Description
ICAI-SAPIENS is a program designed for engineering students interested in getting international experience without missing technical
courses required for graduation with their classes. We offer a set of engineering courses, and a set of Spanish Culture and Language
courses. Engineering courses are taught in English, while the students get immersed in the Spanish Culture through spanish language
courses and leisure activities with classmates.
Location
All courses are held at Universidad Pontificia Comillas. We are located in the center of Madrid:
Calle Alberto Aguilera 25
28015 Madrid, Spain
Calendar
Courses are offered during the Spring Term in a US-compatible calendar:
Mid-January through Mid-May (including exams).
Introduction to Sustainable Energy is a one-week intensive course in June.
About Courses
Courses offered in this program are meant to be equivalent to major subjects in a standard U.S. Engineering sophomore year.
Students in this program can also register for any of the courses of ICAI School of Engineering, either in English or in Spanish, upon
checking for schedule compatibility. (See List of ICAI courses for information on additional courses).
Fundamental Engineering Courses
[DMA-SAP-130] Introduction to Differential Equations
Techniques and applications of ordinary differential equations, including Fourier series and boundary value
problems, linear systems of differential equations, and an introduction to partial differential equations. Covers
a typical math 2xx course plus linear systems. Intended for engineering majors and other who require a
working knowledge of differential equations.
4 h/week
This subject was pre-approved by Univ. of Illinois-UC as an equivalent to MATH 286
[DMA-SAP-131] Applied Linear Algebra
Introductory course emphasizing techniques of linear algebra with applications to engineering; topics include
matrix operations, determinants, linear equations, vector spaces, linear transformations, eigenvalues and
eigenvectors, inner products and norms, orthogonality, equilibrium, and linear dynamical systems.
4 h/week
This subject was pre-approved by Univ. of Illinois-UC as an equivalent to MATH 415
[DIM-SAP-131] Thermal Physics
First and second laws of thermodynamics including kinetic theory of gases, heat capacity, heat engines,
introduction to entropy and statistical mechanics, and introduction to application of free energy and
Boltzmann factor. A calculus-based approach for majors in engineering, mathematics, physics and chemistry.
2 h/week
This subject was pre-approved by Univ. of Illinois-UC as an equivalent to PHYS 213
[DIM-SAP-132] Quantum Physics
Interference and diffraction, photons and matter waves, the Bohr atom, uncertainty principle, and wave
mechanics. A calculus-based course for majors in engineering, mathematics, physics, and chemistry.
2 h/week
This subject was pre-approved by Univ. of Illinois-UC as an equivalent to PHYS 214
[DIM-SAP-133] Introduction to Dynamics
Kinematics and dynamics of the three-dimensional motion of particles; kinematics and dynamics of the plane
motion of rigid bodies; methods of work energy and impulse momentum; moving reference frames.
4 h/week
This subject was pre-approved by Univ. of Illinois-UC as an equivalent to TAM 212
[DEA-SAP-135] Introduction to Electric and Electronic Circuits
The goals are to impart the fundamental principles of electric circuits, semiconductor devices, and electronic
circuits that constitute the foundation for preparing a non-major to take follow-on courses involving electric
and electronic circuits.
5 h/week
(3h Theory + 2h Lab)
This subject was pre-approved by Univ. of Illinois-UC as an equivalent to ECE 205 (theory) + ECE 206 (lab)
[DIM-SAP-136] Thermodynamics
Engineering Thermodynamics is concerned with energy transformation and utilization. The key of the subject
is the analysis of any energy process, determining the variation of the thermophysical properties of the fluids
involved and applying energy, entropy and exergy balances. Basic air-conditioning processes are also studied.
Examples and study cases about heat to mechanical/electric power conversion are analysed.
3 h/week
This subject was pre-approved by Univ. of Illinois-UC as an equivalent to ME 300
Spanish Culture and Language Courses
[IIM-SAP-130] Intensive Spanish Course
Intensive Spanish for Exchange Students course, held the first two weeks of January (Jan 8th - jan 20th).

[IIM-SAP-131] Semester Spanish Course
Standard Spanish for Exchange Students course, following the Intensive version.
3 h/week
[DOI-SAP-130] Spanish Culture through Films
The course has been designed to provide students with an overview of recent Spanish culture as depicted in
several movies. It also aims at providing students with an understanding of culture as a site for the
construction of meaning and identity.
4 h/week
Other Language courses
Spanish culture and history through the Cinema.
3 h/week
Elective courses on Engineering Technologies
[DIM-OPT-432] Nanotechnology
The new frontiers of materials, chemical and biological research. Oriented to give the basic principles of
nanotechnology and nanomaterials, without requiring quantum physics knowledge, and to swipe through the
applications and the future possibilities in the field.
2 h/week
[DEA-OPT-431] Automotive Electronics
Electronics in vehicles. Modern electronics systems implementation.
2 h/week
[DIM-OPT-433] Automotive Engines
Basic Engine design: components and systems. Basic thermodynamics. Otto, Diesel, Atkinson and Miller
cycles. Engine performance modeling and prediction. Link between ground vehicle and engines. Aerodynamic
Drag, grading resistance and rolling resistance. Exhaust Emissions (tail pipe).Hybrid and Electric vehicles.
2 h/week
[DEA-OPT-430] Satellite Navigation Fundamentals and Applications
Despite its short life, Global Satellite Navigation is an essential technology that combines state-of-the-art
results from different fields of engineering and science. This course provides an introduction to the
fundamentals of satellite positioning and its main applications. With a multidisciplinary aim, the course is
addressed to university students with general knowledge in maths and/or physics (first year engineering,
maths, physics, or similar).
2 h/week

Research Project
Research projects with ICAI professors, offered each year (availability varies). 1 ECTS per 20 hours of research.
40 or 80 hours
Introduction to Sustainable Energy
The course provides an integrated introduction to the current state of the global energy situation based primarily on
fossil fuels, and a view of the alternatives looking forward. It focuses on the primary mechanisms of several key
sustainable technologies and analyzes energy systems from systems engineering and engineering economics point of
view. Students will use this background to explore technologies of their choice in a realistic application scenario in a
significant term project.
20 h intensive
course in June
(*) 2 hours/week of lecture and laboratory classes correspond to 3 ECTS (European Credits).
