2016.17 Fourth Grade Science, Ongoing Expectations Big Ideas/Key Concepts: Understandings about scientific inquiry and the ability to conduct inquiry are essential for living in the 21 st century. Society benefits when engineers apply scientific discoveries to design materials and processes that develop into enabling technologies. Ongoing Expectations Note: Do not teach a separate unit at year’s beginning. Embed inquiry and tech/engineering throughout all 4 quarters within content where appropriate. Embedded Inquiry SPI 0407.Inq.1 Select an investigation that could be used to answer a specific question. 4. WCE.SC.1: Maintain a science notebook that includes: observations, data, diagrams and explanations to analyze and communicate scientific findings (observation, data, diagrams, explanations, conclusions and reflections). Embedded Technology & Engineering SPI 0407.T/E.1 Select a tool, technology, or invention that was used to solve a human problem. SPI 0407.T/E.2 Recognize the connection between a scientific advance and the development of a new tool or technology. Page 1 of 3 2016.17 Fourth Grade Science, Quarter 1 Big Ideas/Key Concepts: The earth is surrounded by an active atmosphere and an energy system that controls the distribution life, local weather, climate, and global temperature. Major geologic events that occur over eons or brief moments in time continually shape and reshape the surface of the Earth, resulting in continuous global change. All living things are made of cells that perform functions necessary for life. Standards Student Friendly “I Can” Statements Weather Weather SPI 0407.8.1 Identify the basic features of the water cycle and describe their importance to life on earth. I can identify and model the inter-relationships within the water cycle (e.g., ground water, run off, evaporation, condensation, water vapor, transpiration, and precipitation). SPI 0407.8.2 Distinguish between weather and climate. I can use short and long term weather data to differentiate between weather and climate. I can use an illustration, such as a weather map to predict and draw conclusions about how weather and climate affect the water cycle. Atmosphere and Earth Atmosphere and Earth SPI 0407.7.1 Design a simple model to illustrate how the wind and movement of water alter the earth’s surface. I can differentiate between the two weathering (water, wind, and ice) processes of erosion, and deposition. I can analyze and communicate how the Earth’s landscapes change as a result of erosion and deposition (e.g., weathering). I can design and prepare a demonstration to illustrate how wind and water cause erosion and deposition to affect landscapes. Page 2 of 3 SPI 0407.T/E.1 Select a tool, technology, or invention that was used to solve a human problem. I can choose the appropriate tool for measuring information about the weather (e.g., barometer, thermometer, hygrometer, rain gauge, anemometer, wind vane, wind sock, and weather satellite). SPI 0407.7.2 Analyze how different earth materials are utilized to solve human problems or improve the quality of life. I can evaluate how some earth materials can be used to solve human problems and enhance the quality of life (e.g.: wood, coal, water, oil, rocks, and minerals). 4. WCE.SC.2: Evaluate the benefits and unintended consequences of different earth materials that are utilized to solve human problems or improve the quality of life. I can use data from informational texts to evaluate the benefits and unintended consequences of different earth materials that can be used to solve human problems and enhance the quality of life. 4. WCE.SC.3: Analyze and evaluate man’s impact on renewable and non-renewable resources/Earth materials. I can differentiate between renewable (e.g., sunlight, wind, water) and nonrenewable resources/Earth materials (e.g., fossil fuels and minerals). SPI 0407.T/E.2 Recognize the connection between a scientific advance and the development of a new tool or technology. I can use data from informational texts to analyze and evaluate man’s use of renewable or nonrenewable resources through technology. Cells Cells SPI 0407.1.1 Compare basic structures of plant and animal cells. I can recognize that cells are the building blocks of all living things. I can use illustrations or direct observations to compare and contrast the basic structures of plant and animal cells. This means I know that a plant cell has chloroplast and a cell wall and animal cells do not. I can create and label a basic model of the cell that illustrates different cell structures and describes their functions. (Organelles: cell membrane, cell wall, chloroplast, cytoplasm, nucleus, chromosomes, vacuoles, and mitochondria) SPI 0407.T/E.1 Select a tool, technology, or invention that was used to solve a human problem. I can use a microscope as a tool that helps people learn about cells. Page 3 of 3
