What does this picture of the city of Rome tell you about the Romans? Rome • Rome began as a weak city-state on the Italian Peninsula. It was heavily influenced by the Greeks and Roman Military Tech What advantages did the Roman Army have over other societies? What is a Republic? • A republic is a form of democracy in which the people vote for politicians to make political decisions. Also called a representative democracy How is a representative democracy different from a direct democracy? Who were the Patricians? • Patricians were members of the landowning upper class. They made up the Senate who made laws. Who were the Plebeians? • Plebeians were farmers, merchants, artisans, soldiers and traders who made up the bulk of the population. They elected their own officials called Tribunes who protected their rights by vetoing laws viewed harmful to them by the Senate. What Roman ideas about government spread to the United States? • Over 2000 years later, the framers of the U.S. Constitution would adapt Roman Representative Democracy.
