The Death of Julius Caesar Why kill Caesar? • The people were not pleased with their living conditions. • Caesar was becoming more of a king, Romans had had a republic for 450 years. • The Roman Senators wanted power restored to the Senate. The Plan • The Conspirators would toss him off a bridge and slay him below. A New Plan • The Roman Senate had called for a meeting where Caesar was to be present at the Hall of Pompey. This would be the place of murder… The Conspirators • Brutus, Cassius, Decimus led the plot to kill Caesar. Brutus • Father was killed by Pompey. • A friend of Caesar. • Brother-in-law of Cassius. • Unhappy with the state of the Roman Republic. Cassius • Roman general • Saw Caesar’s power as a threat. • Mastermind behind the plot to kill Caesar The Murder The Aftermath • Mark Antony and Octavian track down the murderers and conspirators and kill them all. Task: • Based on your knowledge of the events leading up to and including the death of Julius Caesar, create a short skit/ re-enactment about some part of the Ides of March. – Caesar meeting with Calpurnia – Caesar’s meeting with the Senate – Brutus’ internal struggles – Brutus, Cassius, Decimus and others discussing the plan – Octavian and Mark Antony’s Revenge – Any other events or possible events
