Part 4 Respiration System I. Respiratory System A-The circulatory system gets the oxygen it provides to the cells from the respiratory system. 1. Cells use this oxygen in the process of cellular respiration, in which nutrients from digested food combine with the oxygen to release energy and produce the waste materials carbon dioxide and water. B. Respiration brings oxygen from the air to the blood, and returns carbon dioxide from the blood to the air. C. Path of air through respiratory system. 1- Air first enters the nose were it is cleaned and warmed. 2- Clean air is now passed through the trachea or windpipe. 3- The air branches off to the lungs through tubes called bronchi. 4- The bronchi branch into smaller & smaller tubes call Bronchiole at the end of these tubes are tiny air sacs, called alveoli that are surrounded by capillaries. a- Here gases are exchanged; oxygen into the blood and CO2out of the blood by the process of diffusion and then exhaled out. It consists of the lungs, skin, kidneys, and liver. 1. The lungs rid the body CO2 & H2O vapor each time you exhale. 2. The skin gets rid of wastes when you perspire. Perspiration = liquid waste consisting of water and salts. 3.The kidneys = maintain a proper balance of water and minerals. The kidneys, remove excess water, salts, and urea from the blood. This fluid is called urine. Vein Kidney Ureter Bladder Urethra Artery Kidney Ureter III- Metabolism: is the sum of all the chemical reactions that take place in your body. {Take in food, break it down, and use the energy in it, your build and repair tissues; you store fat.} A- Metabolism can be influenced by hormones, exercise, diet, and aging. 1. Exercise increases metabolism because cells need more oxygen. When you eat too much, your metabolism stores the excess as fat. As you reach old age, your metabolism slows.
