Circulatory System Some scientist say that you can wrap your blood vessels around the equator twice! Diagram of the heart (left) Diagram of the Circulatory System (top) The Job The Circulatory System is a transport system used to take materials to different places. The Thick-Walled Blood Vessel Arteries – A blood vessel that carries oxygenated blood away from the heart The oxygenated blood are then transferred into capillaries. The main artery is the aorta which is in the area of your neck, people commit suicide by cutting there aorta. The Thinnest Blood Vessel Capillaries-Blood Vessels that gives the oxygen and nutrients to the cells The cells then release waste like carbon dioxide into the blood. Capillaries are so tiny that only one blood cell can fit through at time The Thinner-Walled Blood Vessel Veins- branching blood vessels Veins carry blood with carbon dioxide back to the heart through the pulmonary vein. Red Blood Cell Red Blood Cell – Cells in your blood that pick up carbon dioxide from your cells to your lungs. Red blood cells look red because of a protein, hemoglobin. Red blood cells are a disk-like shape. White Blood Cells White Blood Cells – blood cells that fight germs Without white blood cells you would be sick almost all the time. White blood cells release antibodies if you are familiar with the germs to kill them. Platelets Platelets-blood cells that heal wounds Platelets clog the wound and seals it. Platelets are produced in the bone marrow. Protein in platelets allow them to stick to blood vessel's wall and to each other. Plasma Plasma- the liquid element of blood Plasma drops off a variety of substances to the cells and picks up waste. Plasma contained about 90% water and 10% proteins. Plasma is usually straw colored (left), or a grayish cloudy color depending on your diet and health. The Relationship Between the Other Body Systems The Circulatory System helps out the Respiratory System by taking oxygen from the lungs and dropping off carbon dioxide. The circulatory system also helps the digestive system by transporting the nutrients to the cells. Keep Your Circulatory System Healthy!!! Eat a variety of foods, but not too much junk food to help your cells get the nutrients they need. Exercising is also excellent because your heart beats faster and it gets stronger, after all it is a muscle. Last, but not least DON'T SMOKE! The bad air that you breathe in might get picked up by the blood cells and get circulated around the body
