The Civil War By #15 Introduction The North and South started a bloody Civil War The North and South fought in the most important battle in Gettysburg. The purpose was that the North and South disagreed that slaves should be allowed in new territories and states. The Union and Confederate Armies In the North, Lincoln asked men to fight for the Union to keep the U.S. one country. The South wouldn’t let African Americans to join the war. The North let African Americans join the war. The Battle of Gettysburg In the North, most of the Union commanded by General George G. Meade, lined up on a strip of high ground. Then, 15,000 troops attacked the middle of General Meade’s defensive line. The South lost the Battle of Gettysburg. Military Tactics and Technology The North used railroads to help them move quickly than the South. The South was the first to use the telegraph to communicate over long distances. Union spied in hot air balloons to watch their enemies movements. Combat Conditions The North and South attacked on enemies positions usually starting with loud artillery shells that filled the air with noise and clouds of stinging, black smoke. Bullets and artillery shells tore on the enemies ripping arms, legs, and heads. If soldiers ran out of bullets they beat each other with their fists, stones, and fence posts. Medical Care The North used bone saws to remove arms and legs. In the South they didn’t have tools or medicines. The North and South tried to ease the sick and wounded soldiers. Food and Drink The North ate dry biscuits called hardtack. The South boiled a root called chicory to make coffee. They hunted, picked berries, and took fruit from orchards. Conditions on the Home Front In the North many people were angry about the draft. In the South, Southerners were affected the most. The Union soldiers stole food, burned houses, and set crops on fire. From Gettysburg to Appomattox For the North to capture Richmond, Virginia, they lost many men doing this. The Union won the Civil War. Lee surrendered to Grant and the Confederate lost the Civil War. Abraham Lincoln Lincoln told Grant to be in charge of the Union Army. The South wanted to kill Lincoln. When the Union won, all the slaves were free. Conclusion Americans disagreed about how to settle in the West. Union and Confederate soldiers fought in the Battle of Gettysburg. Robert E. Lee surrendered to Grant at the courthouse and the Union won the Civil War.
