Fugitive Slave Act- 1850 law meant to help slaveholders recapture runaway slaves
Frederick Douglass- former slave; abolitionist and journalist
Underground Railroad- a series of escape routes used by slaves escaping from the South
Harriet Tubman- conductor on the Underground Railroad
John Brown’s Raid- attempt by John Brown to arm slaves and begin a slave revolt
Confederacy- nation formed by Southern states
Border States- slave states that chose to stay in the Union
Ft. Sumter- Union fort in SC; first battle of Civil War
Jefferson Davis- President of Confederacy
Robert E. Lee- top Confederate general
Ulysses S. Grant- top Union general
54th Massachusetts Volunteers- regiment of African-American soldiers that gained fame for its courage
Emancipation Proclamation- document issued by Lincoln that declared that all slaves in Confederate
held territory were free
Battle of Gettysburg- battle in 1863 in PA when Union stopped a Confederate invasion of the North
Pickett’s Charge- failed assault on Union positions on final day of Battle of Gettysburg
Gettysburg Address- speech made by Lincoln after the Battle of Gettysburg
Sherman’s March to the Sea- Union general Sherman’s destructive march across Georgia
Appomattox Court House- town in Virginia where Lee surrendered to Grant
John Wilkes Booth- Confederate supporter who assassinated Lincoln
Thirteenth Amendment- Constitutional amendment that ended slavery
