Emancipation
Proclamation
• A statement issued by Abraham Lincoln
• September 22, 1862, it declared that all slaves
in the rebellious Confederate states would be
free
Gettysburg Address
• The speech given by
Abraham Lincoln after the Battle of Gettysburg
which explained the ideals and spirit of
democracy and to continue the fight for it.
• Changed the purpose of the Civil War from
preserving the Union to abolition of slavery
Civil War Amendments
• 13th
– Freed all slaves
• 14th
– Made former slaves citizens
• 15th
– Gave males the right to vote
Reconstruction
• Lincoln want to readmit all states back to the
Union with minimal requirements
• He also wanted the states to decide for
themselves what to do with former slaves
• BUT he was killed and Lincoln’s plan went out
the window
Radical Reconstruction
• Andrew Johnson becomes president and
allows congress to punish confederate states
– Former confederate states must write new
constitutions and ask to be readmitted (which
could be denied)
– No former confederate loyalists could NOT
participate in government roles
– Confederate states put under Martial Law until
1877
