Mass vs. Motet Music in the Renaissance • Many of the composers in the Renaissance came from an area of Europe called Flanders – Flanders was made up of the present day countries of Netherlands, Belgium and the northern part of France. – We call them Flemish composers Josquin Desprez : was a Flemish composer during the Renaissance that wrote motets, masses, and secular vocal music. •Born in Belgium, but lived his life in Italy working for dukes and the Pope. Instruments in the Renaissance • Instrumental was still not as popular as vocal music, but it did become more important than in the middle ages. – Instrument music was used most often for dancing. – Many new instruments were invented during this time.
