Now music is done not just by monks, but
church choirs made up of only males.

Music in the royal court:

In middle ages, there was usually only one
musician at each court, now there may be as
many as 60 musicians (singers and
instrumentalist.)

There was competition here as well to have the
best musicians between kings, princes, and
dukes.

Renaissance came from an area of
Europe called Flanders
– Flanders was made up of the present
day countries of Netherlands, Belgium
and the northern part of France.
– We call them Flemish composers

that wrote motets,
masses, and secular
vocal music.

The Madrigal

The most important kind of secular
music during this time was the
Madrigal
– A madrigal is a piece of vocal music set to
the words of a poem that is usually about
love.
Instruments in the Renaissance

Instrumental was still not as popular
as vocal music, but it did become
more important than in the middle
ages.
– Instrument music was used most often for
dancing.
– Many new instruments were invented
during this time.
