Levels of Organization
We begin our journey
with the atom
 The
atom is the smallest particle that
maintains it’s properties
 Remember!
The atom is made of protons,
neutrons and electrons
Next, the molecule
 Two
or more atoms bonded together
Fat
Followed by the organelle
 Remember
organ”
 Several
– “organelle” means “little
molecules bonded together form
the organelles, which are found inside of
your cells
And then, the cell
 The
basic unit of structure and function of
living things
We interrupt this story
for a quick review…
 The
three parts of the cell theory are…
All living things are made up of one or more
cells
Cells are the basic units of structure and
function in living things
Cells come only from other living cells
Now back to your
regularly scheduled
PowerPoint…
Which makes up the tissues
A
group of cells that look alike and work
together
Kinds of tissue

Muscle tissue – made
of cells that can
become shorter
(contract) and move
bones

Epithelial (covering) tissue – made of epithelial
cells that are tightly joined together, protect the
body (our skin!)

Kleenex tissue – used
to blow your nose

Connective tissue – these cells work together to
hold parts of the body together.

Examples include bone, ligaments, tendons and
blood

Nerve tissue – made
up of nerve cells or
neurons, and carries
messages throughout
the body

Nerve tissue makes
up most of your brain
and spinal cord

Nerves make muscles
act, and controls
breathing, digestion
and heartbeat
And tissues make up organs
A
group of two or more tissues that work
together to do a special job
 Examples
stomach
include the heart, brain, and
The organs make up organ
systems
 Groups
of organs working together to
carry out life processes and keep an
organism alive
 Organ
systems include digestive,
endocrine, excretory, circulatory, and
nervous
And our story comes to an
end (for now) with the
organism… which is made
up of all of the organ
systems functioning
together
An organism…
