Chemistry The Atom The Atom The nucleus of the atom is made up of protons and neutrons. Protons are positively charged. Neutrons are neutral and have no charge. This made them very difficult to find. Electrons are located outside the nucleus and are negatively charged. The nucleus is heavier than the electrons and stays still. The electrons move around the nucleus. The Atom Cont. Period on the periodic table represents the number of shells or energy levels. The group on the periodic table refers to the number of electrons in the outer most shell. Atomic number tells you how many protons that are in the atom. Shells Atoms are contained in shells. Shells are also known as energy levels. The number of shells depends upon its place in the periodic table. The period number tells you how many shells or energy levels an atom has. There are three main shells that we are going to study. Sub shells are what is used after the first three shells. Shells Shell #1 can only have 2 electrons. Shell #2 can only have 8 electrons. Shell #3 can only have 8 electrons.
