18. Course Description:
This course includes the common organic reactions (classical and recent) including their generic names,
mechanism, reagents, conditions, the required starting materials and their generated products. Advanced
synthetic strategies and retro-synthetic analysis, synthesis of complex natural products with biologically

interesting molecules such as antibiotics, antihypertensive agents, hormones anticoagulants and antiviral
agents.
19. Course aims and outcomes:
A- Aims:
Provide postgraduate master students with a special and advanced education in the field of
Pharmaceutical organic chemistry and enable them to gain the skills and attributes required for the
responsible practice of Organic chemistry experiments.
B- Intended Learning Outcomes (ILOs): Upon successful completion of this course students will be
able to …
A) Knowledge and understanding:
The course would provides students with excellent opportunities to demonstrate knowledge and
understanding qualities and develop skills appropriate for the design, synthesis and optimize novel
Medicinal Compounds.
Knowledge and Understanding : Upon completion of the course, students will be able to:
1-Demonstrate the principles of advanced organic chemistry and its related subjects including
fundamentals of organic chemistry of drug synthesis.
2- Contribute to the development of medicinal agents through the optimizing and synthesis of novel
drug candidates.
3- Understand up-to-date applications of organic chemistry in drug synthesis.
4- Awareness regarding legal authorities and patency rights
5- Understanding the basics of good laboratory
6- Shows clearly full consciousness of ethics in all aspects of scientific research including novel drug
in vivo testing.
B) Intellectual Skills: Upon completion of the course, students will be able to:
1- Proper handling of chemical reagents and the assignment of safety sheet.
1-Design possible synthetic pathway of a specific drug candidate and predict the reactions
mechanisms.
2- Evaluate the anticipated problems and side reactions that might emerge during the synthesis
process.
3- Develop necessary method for drug target purification.
4- Propose of a laboratory schemes for an advanced medicinal drug synthesis.
5- Be a decisions maker in proposing a synthetic scheme based on material availability, safety, cost
and experiment time.
C) Professional and Practical Skills: Upon completion of the course, students will be able to:
1- Apply professional skills in synthesis and evaluation of different pharmaceutical organic
compounds.
2- Put in writing and discuss the target compound synthetic pathway, proposed mechanism of the
reactions in the form of thesis and scientific papers.
3- Pick up and apply the proper techniques and precaution during the practical work in the lab
D) General and Transferable Skills: Upon completion of the course, students will be able to:
1- Interact effectively with professionals.
2- Search scientific resources to find out the proper scientific materials.
3- Pursuit self estimation in drug synthesis for personal learning needs.
4- Restore information in the field of advanced organic chemistry from different sources.

22. Evaluation Methods and Course Requirements:
Opportunities to demonstrate achievement of the ILOs are provided through the following
assessment methods and requirements:
Written Exam, Seminars, activity workshops, organic laboratory visit, follow up and oral
presentations.
23. Course Policies:
A- Attendance policies:
Students’ attendance must comply with the regulations of The University of Jordan. However, students are
recommended to attend all lectures to fulfil the course purpose

Also, statistical analysis will be held to find out students achievement based on students written exam and
oral presentations results.
