Energy Forever Lesson Starter Answer in sentences at the back of your jotter: 1. We all need energy to live. In your jotters write down as many forms of energy as you know. Experiences and Outcomes I can investigate some of the processes which contribute to climate change and discuss the possible impact of atmospheric change on the survival of living things. SCN 3-05b By investigating renewable energy sources and taking part in practical activities to harness them, I can discuss their benefits and potential problems. SCN 3-15b Outline of topic Energy types and conversion Fossil fuels Climate change and impact Nuclear power Renewable energy Learning Outcomes 1. 2. By the end of this lesson I will be able to: State the eight different types of energy. State that energy cannot be made or destroyed, but it can be changed from one form to another. Sound energy The vibrating drum and the plucked guitar string transfer energy to the air in the form of a sound wave. This sound energy can be transferred to your eardrum as movement (kinetic) energy. Electrical energy Electrical energy reaches the light bulb and is transferred into light energy and heat energy. Potential energy The boulder on the mountain has energy because of its position above the ground and the pull of gravity. This energy is called potential energy. Potential energy is transferred into moving (kinetic) energy as it falls to the ground. Heat Energy A cup of hot tea has heat energy. The energy in the liquid particles are transferred to the air. The tea cools down. Chemical Energy When the explosive is detonated, chemical energy stored in the explosive is released in a chemical reaction as heat energy and light energy Chemical energy is found in food, batteries and fuels. Kinetic (movement) Energy Kinetic energy is the scientific name for movement energy. Kinetic energy in humans comes from the chemical energy stored in the food we eat. Cars move because the chemical energy in petrol is transferred into kinetic energy by the engine. Nuclear Energy Naturally: some nuclear energy is produced naturally. For example, the sun and other stars make heat and light by nuclear reactions. Man-made: nuclear energy can be man-made too. Machines called nuclear reactors, parts of nuclear power plants, provide electricity for many cities. Man-made nuclear reactions also occur in the explosion of atomic bombs. Light energy Light energy comes from the sun (solar). This light energy is essential for life on earth. Light energy also comes from burning chemicals e.g candles. Light energy can be transferred from electrical energy using a light bulb. Forms of Energy We all need energy to live. Energy can be classified into 5 action groups and 3 stored groups. Action Stored Kinetic Chemical Heat Nuclear Light Potential Electrical Sound Lesson Starter List the 8 types of energy • Copy and complete the following sentenceEnergy be or destroyed but it can be from one to another • Law of Conservation of Energy Energy cannot be created or destroyed but it can be converted from one form to another Energy Changes Process Food mixer Walking Trampolining House fire Solar panel Battery Wind-up radio Energy Change Energy Changes Process Food mixer Walking Trampolining House fire Solar panel Battery Wind-up radio Energy Change Electrical Chemical Potential Chemical Light Chemical Kinetic Kinetic Kinetic Kinetic Heat + Light Electrical Electrical Potential + Sound
