What is… a Noun?
 A person, place, thing, or idea
 Examples:
 Snow
 Cookie
 Mother
 Common noun:
 Any person, place, or thing
 Proper noun:
 Specific person, place, or thing
 Always Capitalized
What is… A pronoun?
 A word that stands for a noun
 Examples:
 His
 Her
 Them
 Antecedent- The noun for which a pronoun
stands

Types of pronouns
 Personal- refers to people
 Demonstrative- points out a specific person, place, or
thing (This, that, these, those).
 Relative- Relay extra information about a noun (That,
which, who, whom, whose).
 Interrogative- Used to begin a a question (What,
which, who, whom, whose, where).
 Indefinite- Refers to people, places, or things, often
without specifying which ones (somebody, someone,
anybody, everything).
What is… An action verb?
 Tells what action someone or something is
performing
 Examples:
 Run
 Jump
 Walk
 Infinitive- “To form” of the verb
 Ex. I need to walk home.
What is… A helping verb?





Placed before other verbs to form verb phrases
The helping verb might not be in front of the main verb
“Not” is never part of the verb phrase
Be careful with contractions!
Examples:

Am, is, are, was, were
Be, being, been
Has, have, had
May, might, must
Do, did, does
Can, could, will
Would, shall, should
What is… A linking verb?
 Is like an equal sign in a sentence
 Verb that connects a subject with a word that
describes or identifies it
 Examples:
 Become
 Feel
 Seem
What is… An adjective?
 A word that modifies or describes a noun
 Examples:
 Beautiful
 Green
 Immense
What is… An article?
 Indefinite Article- refers to any person, place,
or thing
 A

 Definite Article- refers to a specific person,
place, or thing

 A word that modifies a verb, an adjective, or
another adverb
 Usually ends in –ly
 Answers the questions how, where, when, in
what, way, and to what extent
 Examples:

 Connects words or groups of words
 Coordinating- Connects words or phrases of the
same kind
 For, and, nor, but, or, yet, so
 Correlative- Same as coordinating but used in
pairs
 Not only… but also, neither… nor
 Subordinating- Connects two ideas, makes one
idea dependent on the other
 After, when, although, until
What is… A preposition?
 Relates the noun or pronoun following it to
another word
 Unnecessary part of a sentence
 Anywhere a cat can go
 Examples:

 Expresses feeling or emotion and functions
